Password & Security in cPanel

The Password & Security feature in cPanel allows you to update your account password and configure two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect your hosting account from unauthorized access. Changing your password regularly and enabling 2FA are essential steps for maintaining account security.

Step 1 — Log in to cPanel

  1. Visit your cPanel login URL (for example, https://yourdomain.com:2083).
  2. Enter your username and password, then click Log in to access your cPanel dashboard.

Step 2 — Access the Password & Security Interface

  1. In the Preferences section, click Password & Security.
  2. The page displays two main sections:
    • Change Password — to update your current cPanel password.
    • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) — to add an extra layer of login protection.

Step 3 — Change Your Password

  1. In the Change Password section, enter your details:
    • Old Password — Your current password.
    • New Password — Your new secure password.
    • New Password (Again) — Re-enter the new password for confirmation.
  1. Use the Password Generator to create a strong password automatically.
  2. Click Change your password now! to apply the update.
Note: Changing your cPanel password also updates the FTP, Web Disk, and email access credentials if they are linked to the same user.
  1. Scroll down to the Two-Factor Authentication section.
  2. Click Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Scan the QR code with your preferred authentication app (such as Google Authenticator or Authy).
  4. Enter the 6-digit security code from your app and click Configure Two-Factor Authentication.

Once set up, you will need to provide both your password and a time-based security code each time you log in to cPanel.

Step 5 — Test Your Security Settings

  1. Log out of cPanel and log back in using your new password.
  2. If 2FA is enabled, enter the code generated by your authentication app.
  3. Verify that you can access your dashboard successfully.

Notes and Best Practices

  • Always use a strong password that includes upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Do not share your cPanel password with anyone.
  • If you suspect your account has been compromised, change your password immediately.
  • Regularly back up your authentication app or record recovery codes in case you lose access to your device.
