How to Redirect a Domain in cPanel

Introduction

Domain redirection allows you to automatically send visitors from one domain (or page) to another. It’s especially useful when migrating to a new domain, avoiding broken links, or improving SEO.

Steps to Set Up a Redirect in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel

Go to your cPanel dashboard, then open the Redirects option from the Domains section.

  1. Choose the Redirect Type

You’ll need to select the type of redirect:

  • 301 (Permanent) → best when moving your site to a new domain.
  • 302 (Temporary) → used for short-term redirects (e.g., maintenance or testing).

  1. Select the Domain and Target URL
  • From the dropdown, choose the domain you want to redirect.
  • In the Redirects to field, enter the destination URL.

  1. Configure Additional Options
  • Decide how you want to handle www redirection.
  • If you want all pages to redirect with the same path (e.g., domain.com/page.html → newdomain.com/page.html), enable Wildcard Redirect.

  1. Save Changes

Click Add to apply the redirect.

Types of Redirects

  • 301 Permanent Redirect → Best for SEO, keeps ranking from the old domain.
  • 302 Temporary Redirect → For testing or temporary maintenance.
  • Meta Refresh → Runs in the browser; not recommended for SEO.
  • URL Frame → Hides the destination URL; not SEO-friendly.

Why Use Redirects?

  • Migrate your website to a new domain.
  • Avoid 404 errors when a page is deleted.
  • Consolidate multiple domains under one main site.
  • Preserve SEO rankings when URLs change.
