Download WordPress Files from Old Host (FileZilla)

What to copy (important)

  • Entire WordPress root (usually public_html or www), especially:
    • wp-content/ (themes, plugins, uploads) — critical
    • wp-config.php
    • .htaccess (hidden file — controls permalinks)
    • wp-admin/wp-includes/, top-level PHP files (index.php, etc.)

Steps — Download with FileZilla

  1. Install FileZilla (or open it
  2. Connect to the old server
    • Host: ftp.yourdomain.com or server IP
    • Username: your cPanel/FTP user
    • Password: your FTP password
    • Port: 21 (FTP) or 22 (SFTP) — Use SFTP if available for security.
  1. Enable showing hidden files (so .htaccess is visible)
    • In FileZilla: Server → Force showing hidden files.

  1. Navigate to the WordPress document root (e.g., /public_html/your-site/).
  2. Select all files/folders and download to a local folder on your computer.
    • Wait for the transfer to complete. Use the Transfer Queue to monitor progress.
  1. Verify downloaded content — check that wp-content/uploadsthemespluginswp-config.php and .htaccess are present.

Tips

  • For many small files or large uploads, SFTP + compression or SSH rsync is faster and more reliable. Ask Thamara for support if you want assistance.
  • If FileZilla disconnects, retry or raise timeouts: Edit → Settings → Connection → Timeout.
