Download WordPress Files from Old Host (FileZilla)
What to copy (important)
- Entire WordPress root (usually
public_htmlorwww), especially: wp-content/(themes, plugins, uploads) — criticalwp-config.php.htaccess(hidden file — controls permalinks)wp-admin/,wp-includes/, top-level PHP files (index.php, etc.)
Steps — Download with FileZilla
- Install FileZilla (or open it
- Connect to the old server
- Host:
ftp.yourdomain.comor server IP - Username: your cPanel/FTP user
- Password: your FTP password
- Port:
21(FTP) or22(SFTP) — Use SFTP if available for security.
- Host:
- Enable showing hidden files (so
.htaccessis visible)
- In FileZilla:
Server → Force showing hidden files.
- In FileZilla:

- Navigate to the WordPress document root (e.g.,
/public_html/your-site/). - Select all files/folders and download to a local folder on your computer.
- Wait for the transfer to complete. Use the Transfer Queue to monitor progress.
- Verify downloaded content — check that
wp-content/uploads,themes,plugins,wp-config.phpand.htaccessare present.
Tips
- For many small files or large uploads, SFTP + compression or SSH
rsyncis faster and more reliable. Ask Thamara for support if you want assistance. - If FileZilla disconnects, retry or raise timeouts:
Edit → Settings → Connection → Timeout.
